SeeKenya

Laís story

Hi, my name is Laís. I’m a student nurse and joined the See Kenya team in October 2024. This experience has profoundly transformed my perspective on nursing and shaped my future goals. Initially, I found myself wondering, ‘How could I contribute without any specific skills in eye care?’ People often asked, ‘How will you help?’ My response was simple: If I lack the skills to assist in the clinic, I’ll do whatever else I can - even if that means cleaning. I’m willing to help in any way possible.

From the moment I met the team, I was struck by their passion and dedication to the mission. Their enthusiasm inspired me, but it was their support and confidence in each of us that truly made a difference. After just half a day of training and with experienced supervision, I felt empowered in my role. This opportunity allowed me to connect with patients, learn about their culture, and even play with the little ones. I received countless thank-you drawings from children - a small gesture that meant the world to me.

See Kenya is truly opening eyes to a better life! They’re transforming the lives of patients, but it’s more than that - everyone on the team feels the impact. Being part of this mission has shown me new possibilities and instilled a sense of purpose. It’s not just about vision; it’s about empowering people to recognise their potential and make a difference. Through See Kenya, I’ve rediscovered my passion for creating positive change as a nurse and am inspired every day to help others see life in a new light.

During my two unforgettable weeks in Meru, I moved beyond the confines of my privileged bubble and witnessed poverty and need firsthand. Nothing was more rewarding than the feeling of helping someone and being part of a change in their lives. Nothing compares to receiving their thanks after a long day of work. We were even being invited to share a meal in their homes as a gesture of gratitude. Every day became my new favourite day.

A highlight of the trip was learning a bit of Swahili; seeing patients’ faces light up when I welcomed them in their language was immensely rewarding. Around the table, we shared highlights of the day, from the funny, to the moving, to the heartbreaking. We became more than colleagues; we became family sharing laughter and meals every day that energised us after long hours of work. These connections and memories will stay with me always.

Now that I understand SeeKenya’s work, challenges and needs, I encourage you to embark on this journey for yourself, whether as a volunteer or by helping someone else see a better life. SeeKenya wasn’t just a one-time experience for me, but lifetime commitment. My new SeeKenya family and I are eager to show you what we can accomplish together with your support.

This experience has inspired me to approach my future work with an open heart and deep respect for every person I serve, one patient at a time. SeeKenya taught me that with compassion and a willingness to learn, I can make a difference wherever I am placed. That’s the kind of nurse I aspire to be.
